What is Spring Shreds?

What is Spring Shreds? 

Spring shreds is our coaching philosophy for optimal fat loss and body recomposition. We structure food quality, reduce inflammation within the body, improve insulin sensitivity and also regulate digestion which might have been impacted through poor eating habits and food quality. 



Insulin is a peptide hormone produced by beta cells of the pancreatic islets; it is considered to be the main anabolic hormone of the body. It regulates the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and protein by promoting the absorption of glucose from the blood into liver, fat and skeletal muscle cells.

Over time, our stress levels and consumption of highly processed food can lead to fluctuating blood sugar levels and a constant signal for insulin. What this turns into is ‘insulin’ resistance. 

If someone becomes more ‘insulin resistant’ they could show pre diabetic like symptoms and have a hard time metabolising carbohydrates and managing blood sugar levels… this is not optimal for maintaining a healthy body composition! 


Inflammatory foods

Along with creating an environment for unstable blood sugar levels, processed foods can contribute to higher levels of inflammation in our digestive system and around the body. 

All processed foods can cause inflammation. They can alter the bacteria that live in our gut, and that alteration has the ability to interact with our immune system and eventually trigger it in a way that leads to chronic inflammation.

Processed foods also tend to be hyperpalatable meaning once we consume a small amount, the chances of us having an urge to consume more is pretty high. 

In our spring shreds plan, we reduce inflammatory foods and look to help reduce any flare ups. 

This promotes a healthier bodily function and contributes to improved energy, recovery and training performance. 



Protein is also high on our list of priorities during spring shreds. It is an essential nutrient for the human body. Protein is also one of the building blocks of body tissue and can also serve as a fuel source.

Other potential beneficial outcomes associated with protein include the following: 

1. Increased satiety—protein generally increases satiety to a greater extent than carbohydrate or fat and may increase the likelihood you won’t snack on other macronutrients.

2. Increased thermogenesis—higher-protein diets are associated with increased thermogenesis, which also influences satiety and augments energy expenditure (in the longer term, increased thermogenesis contributes to the relatively low-energy efficiency of protein).

3. Maintenance or accretion of fat-free mass—in some individuals, a moderately higher protein diet may provide a stimulatory effect on muscle protein anabolism, favoring the retention of lean muscle mass while improving metabolic profile.
